Commissioning custom furniture.

A commission can begin with an idea, a room that needs a particular piece, or a set of drawings. From the Brooklyn Navy Yard, we work with interior designers, architects and private clients across New York City to develop and make custom furniture.

Start a project

Start where you are.

You don’t need a finished design to approach the studio. Tell us how the piece will be used and what you want it to feel like in the room. References, rough sketches and photographs help us understand what matters to you.

If you already have a design, share the drawings and the details you want to preserve. We can then discuss where the studio’s involvement is needed: design development, fabrication, or the full process through installation.

From idea to installation

Working with the studio.

  1. 01

    Define the commission

We begin with the use, scale and setting of the piece. Together, we discuss what is already decided and what still needs to be explored, alongside budget and timing.

  2. 02

    Develop the design

Sketches, renderings and technical drawings give the conversation something concrete to work from. Material, finish and construction are considered together, guided by Michael’s sculptural approach to form.

  3. 03

    Fabricate and place

Prototyping and making bring the design into the workshop. Delivery and installation requirements form part of the discussion, so the piece is considered in relation to its final space.

What to share.

Send what you have. These details are a starting point, not a requirement for getting in touch.

The piece and its setting
What would you like to make, and how will it be used? Include approximate dimensions and photographs of the space if you have them.
Drawings and references
Send a link to plans, sketches or a moodboard. Point out what you’re drawn to in each reference: a material, a proportion, a finish or a construction detail.
Budget, timing and location
An approximate budget and desired date help frame the conversation. Include the project address or neighborhood and any known delivery or access constraints.

Before we begin.

Do I need a finished furniture design?

No. We work from early ideas and visual references as well as developed drawings. Tell us whether you need design development, fabrication, or support through the full commission.

Can you work with my interior designer or architect?

Yes. Share your design team’s drawings and specifications, along with the intended use of the piece, so we can understand the commission within the wider project.

What determines the cost of custom furniture?

Scale, materials, construction, finish and installation requirements all shape the scope. Share approximate dimensions, references, your budget and your desired timing so we can discuss the project with those details in view.

Where is the studio based?

The studio is based in the Brooklyn Navy Yard and works on commissions across New York City. Include the project location and any access requirements when you get in touch.

Tell us what
you have in mind.

Share your space, your references and what you’d like to make. An initial idea is enough to begin a conversation.
